NIGHT and DUST have different jobs
NIGHT is the public native token of Midnight Network. Holding NIGHT generates DUST, a separate shielded and non-transferable resource used for transaction fees and smart-contract execution; users do not spend NIGHT itself for routine network operations.
Programmable privacy is the network thesis
Midnight uses zero-knowledge technology and a dual-state model to let applications combine public state with protected local data. This is aimed at selective disclosure rather than making the NIGHT asset itself an anonymous-value-transfer token.
